Confessions of a DIY…

Hi, I’m Jenn and I’m a DIY-holic…. I’m a DIY gal, always have been. I wear A LOT of hats and do things moderately well. Designed my first website, taught myself some HTML, PhotoShop, photography, etc. Not to mention creating my product/service and marketing!! This is a major reason why 90% of all small businesses fail and sadly mine was no exception. Since then I’ve been in the construction industry and it’s taught me a lot. With HGTV, the DIY network and reality shows a plenty, we’ve come to believe we are experts in everything! Now that may be a very empowering statement, and my hats off to you for your initiative and ambition.  But we have a saying in the industry about some of our clients, "they know just enough to be dangerous." Let me put it to ya this way….It’s ok for you to change a light bulb, even a burnt out fuse. And if you’re really handy maybe converting those kitchen outlets to GFI’s. But just because you got a book at Border’s or watch Extreme Home Makeover does not give the street creds to reroute electricity from your house to the garage for that workshop you’ve always wanted! ...

So why not DIY?  (Do It Yourself) when it comes to your business? WHY? All the technology is out there on the internet.  I just have to find it!  “It’s FREE! Woo Hoo! I can save lots of money!” . BECAUSE..."Time is Money" -Ben Franklin a) TIME! TIME! TIME! “Damn it Jim, I’m a doctor not a Web 2.0   Technician!”  It keeps you from doing what it is you love to do!! b) Frustration, Stress, and ending up with an unprofessional website. c) Which plugins do you choose? I’m really seeing that SMO (Social Marketing Optimization) is the way to go! Great example--Gary Vaynerchuk (VAY NER CHUK), star of www.winelibrary.com has built an amazing e-commerce site. At first, no one could find him on Google. But Gary went from having 60K unique visitors back in Sept 2007 to over 120K today! The guy must be bringing in at least $150K a month in product revenue alone! He’s also appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Conan O’Brian and Nightline for his innovation and online business savvy. How does he do it? Routinely posts a video blog (vlog) at least couple times a week if not more. He posts on social marketing networks just enough to get people back to his site. I have found that the world of Web 2.0 technology and social marketing can be daunting, exciting and often confusing. Luckily, Daniel Ko, an internet entrepreneur who has made millions with his technology and business savvy is my mentor and friend. Go ahead, Google him…tell your friends. Some nuggets for you: 1. The popular perception that blogging is for hobbyists and ranters is changing into a vehicle for professionals to conduct business. 2.
