Confessions of a DIY…

Hi, I’m Jenn and I’m a DIY-holic….

I’m a DIY gal, always have been. I wear A LOT of hats and do things moderately well. Designed my first website, taught myself some HTML, PhotoShop, photography, etc. Not to mention creating my product/service and marketing!! This is a major reason why 90% of all small businesses fail and sadly mine was no exception.

Since then I’ve been in the construction industry and it’s taught me a lot. With HGTV, the DIY network and reality shows a plenty, we’ve come to believe we are experts in everything! Now that may be a very empowering statement, and my hats off to you for your initiative and ambition.  But we have a saying in the industry about some of our clients, “they know just enough to be dangerous.”

Let me put it to ya this way….It’s ok for you to change a light bulb, even a burnt out fuse. And if you’re really handy maybe converting those kitchen outlets to GFI’s. But just because you got a book at Border’s or watch Extreme Home Makeover does not give the street creds to reroute electricity from your house to the garage for that workshop you’ve always wanted!

You would hire a professional for that, right? Right? Or would you attempt it yourself, risking electrocution to save a couple thousand bucks? Now as preposterous as that sounds, I have known clients (men) who have attempted just that. My company was usually called in after the neighborhood blackout. What was once minor electrical work has now turned into a $10,000 repair job!!

So why would anyone attempt to put together their own professional blog without the help of professionals?!

Ask yourself these following questions:

– Self, am I a Web 2.0 technician?

– Am I a WordPress whiz kid?

– Do I want to be?

.

“Perhaps the very best question that you can memorize and repeat, over and over, is, “what is the most valuable use of my time?”

    Jen,

Wow, you’ve learned a lot from DIY and now you’re sharing it with the world! I had never heard of uTIPu.com, but your video tutorials had great quality so thanks for the tip! I’m building a site called http://www.DougWead.net, so I might try out some of your techniques.

Thanks for the feedback! I have to say that Daniel Ko, CEO of PepBlogger and writer for the meta search engine on Kayak.com has helped me immensely! I will keep the trackback tutorial in mind for the near future! See you on Twitter and I will check out your site as well. Let me know what you discover along the way!
