Does Using a Free Service Save You Money?

I was on twitter last night and came across some informative sites for beginner bloggers. Your Blog Team just posted an article titled “Another Reason to Stay Away from those Free Services”* that I thought was the dilemma facing a lot of new business bloggers today. Do you save money today and use a free blogging platform (i.e. Yahoo) or do you invest in the long term, purchase your own url and set up for the long run?
your own url and set up for the long run?
*Since I posted this blog, the links as well as the referenced website are no longer available. But the feedback I received were from bloggers who started out with a free platform but found that as they grew and more tools became available online, thier website was not able to upgrade. Plus most url’s for these free sites didn’t allow personalized url’s without adding their name to it. For example http://webhead20/blogspot.com. They found when they moved to an independent site, they were also able to get a higher ranking.

If you are a business owner, professional or have aspirations, you are much better off with your personal url, with the ability to earn recognition for your online contributions. I didn’t understand this with my first TypePad blog started almost 3 yrs ago, and a newer blog only 6 months old ranks much higher.
